Day 9

Yesterday at the Winter Olympics was a historic day for the United States team. Shani Davis, the winner of men’s 1000m speed skating event, became the first African American to ever win a gold medal in a solo event at the Winter Olympics and only the second African American overall. (At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Vonetta Flowers was the first, winning gold in women’s bobsled.) Yesterday also saw a South Korean dominance in short track speed skating, with South Korean athletes taking gold and silver in both the Women’s 1500m race and the Men’s 1000m race.
