Bode Down, but U.S. Skiing Isn't Out

The United States had pinned all of their hopes of an Alpine Skiing gold medal on skiing phenom Bode Miller. These hopes appeared to have been nearly dashed with Miller stumbling during Sunday’s men’s downhill competition and his disqualification during today’s men’s combined competition. Little did they know what the rest of the American ski team was capable of accomplishing.

Today American skier Ted Ligety achieved what it was hoped Bode would do: win America’s first ever gold medal in Alpine Skiing. While Bode Miller was the face of American skiing throughout all media, Ted Ligety was the one to accomplish the ultimate goal.

Congratulations to Ted Ligety for ultimately succeeding and being the first American to do so.

  • Ted Ligety shows that American athletes come to the forefront in many events when they are overlooked, and given little if NO chance to win. He is a world class skier, but NO one expected him to even make the podium, much less the top step. Maybe no one but Ted himself, in his dreams of winning a gold. THEN he went out and did just that.

    Hooray for Ted. WTG!!!!!!

  • Can't believe that so much was made of the fact that Bode was disqualified when they should have focused on the young skier who came from the back of the pack to actually win the gold for the US. Go Ted!!!

  • hopefully we are having a chage of guard in the ski team. Bode is an idiot with a big mouth and Ted shows a classy American way.

  • I think there is to much pressure put on Bode and when he does'nt win the gold he must be wasted.
All the skiers are world class and its anybodys medal on a good day. Congradulations to Ted [go USA]

  • The US has won many alpine skiing gold medals, Ted's is not the first. That being said we should continue to root for Bode as he can still win any of the remaining three alpine races. He is still by far our best ski racer and deserves our loyalty. I also think that Bode handles himself very well publicly despite a few offhand comments. Bode is an inspiration. Let's cheer him on!

  • I stand corrected. I reported something that I had read elsewhere and it was incorrect. Ligety's win was the United States' 10th gold medal in apline skiing. But the fact remains that all the media attention was focused on Bode Miller and everyone else was a footnote, if they were mentioned at all. I don't disagree that Miller deserves our loyalty, but he is definitely not living up to the expectations of these Winter Games.
